Knowledge is power!  I believe that educating yourself before any purchase is the best way to make sure that you'll be truly happy.  Here are the top 10 questions I wished I had asked before I ever spent a single dollar on hair extensions.

1.  What is Single Drawn vs. Double Drawn hair?

Single drawn hair means the extensions contain multiple lengths of hair mixed length extensions, resulting in much thinner ends.  Double drawn hair contains hair that is all the same length.  The ends are thick and full.

The majority of hair extensions on the market are single drawn.  Single drawn hair is very cheap to make, because companies mix longer hair with less expensive shorter hair.  This means a company can say that their extensions are 20 inches long, but only 30% of the strands are 20 inch long, the rest are much shorter.  The results are extensions that are very thin on the ends.  This makes them harder to blend, especially for mid and shorter length hair.  I've found that some companies will say their hair is "thick from roots to ends" but won't clarify if their hair is single or double drawn.

Double Drawn hair is very expensive to produce, but worth the investment.  Every hair is the same length, so you get thick, full hair from roots to ends.   Double drawn hair blends beautifully with all hair lengths, even short hair.

The number one question I would ask any company before buying their hair extensions is: Are these single or double drawn hair?  If you can find it on their site, or they aren't willing to say, it's probably single drawn hair.  Double drawn hair is worth paying more for.

2.  What length do I need?

When I started wearing extensions, I thought longer was better.  20 inches or bust!  Now when I look back on those photos, I realized that I loved the fullness that extensions gave my hair, but the length made them look very unnatural and was a total giveaway that I was wearing extensions.  For most people, the longest extension length you will need is 16 inches.  So don't spend more money buying a longer set, just to cut those inches (and your money) into the trash!    Hold a measuring tape from the top of your ear down to your bust.  This will give you a rough idea of where the extensions will fall on you.  Sixteen inches is the ideal length for most people, you might even need to trim them.  When I wear my 16" girlgetglamorousHAIR extensions, not a single person has been able to tell that I'm wearing extensions.  I get a lot of "you have amazing hair," instead of "is that all your hair?" or "are you wearing extensions?" which is what people would ask me before when I was wearing longer extensions.

3.  Why do my extensions have a shorter row near the roots?

Extensions are specially sewn with the top folded over to help prevent shedding.  Once the extensions are clipped in your head, these shorter pieces aren't visible.  All extensions are sewn this way, it's the industry leading standard to prevent shedding.

4.  How long do extensions last?

This really varies with how well you care for your hair.  It can range from 3-4 months with heavier wear to a year with really great care.  Extensions are getting none of the oils from your scalp, so they do need to be treated gently to help them last longer.  I found that I could extend the life of my extensions by only washing them every 15 wears or so, or until I used a ton of hair spray or product.  Also, a pea size amount of coconut oil on the ends helps prevent fried ends.  Try not to heat style too often.

If you go frequently between straight and curly hair (like me) I recommend having two sets of extensions and leaving one set straight and the other curly.  The least amount of heat from a curling iron or flat iron is best.  Leaving one set straight and other curly will add tons of life to each, if you never or rarely flat iron the set you leave straight, you'll be impressed how long the hair lasts.  Heat styling is the number one reason hair extensions dry out and need to be replaced.

Properly storing your extensions on a hanger in a bag will also help add to their longevity.   I find they hold their style longer this way, and need less heat re styling.

Also, if you can, try not to run your hands down through your hair, or wash it by tugging down.  Gently squeeze hair to wash and condition, never pull down to distribute shampoo or conditioner.  Pulling down causes shedding.   For more in depth tips, make sure to check out this "How To Care For Your Hair Extensions" post on our blog.

5.  What is a weft?

A weft refers to each piece of hair that comes in your set.  Each weft size is slightly different, and designed to fit on a different part of your head.  Our extensions are double wefted, meaning two hair tracks (pieces) are sewn together, for extra thickness in each piece, without adding any extra clips.  You will find that having fewer clips makes the extensions much more comfortable to wear all day long.  We make sure that you get the fullness of 160 grams of Indian hair, without the bulk of extra clips.  Each set of girlgetglamorousHAIR contains 160 grams of hair in 9 wefts.

6.  Are hair grams important?

Yes and no.  You definitely need to have enough thickness to blend the extensions naturally with your own hair.  But the most important part is to make sure the hair is double drawn.  160 grams of single drawn hair can still look thin and sparse on the bottom, while 160 grams of double drawn hair looks super thick and full.   girlgetglamorousHAIR sets are each 160 grams of double drawn premium Indian hair.  Most people find that they don't even need to wear the full pack to achieve the look they want.

7.  Will extensions damage my hair?

This is where clip ins have a HUGE advantage.  Clip in extensions won't damage your hair with proper use (never sleep or swim in clip in extensions).  Semi-permanent methods (tape-in, bonding, shrink tubes) look amazing because once they are in because they can be trimmed to the proper length and stay that way.  But they will pull out some of your natural hair from the weight.  Over time, this can lead to hair loss or bald patches if they are applied in the same spot over and over again.  Clip ins won't cause damage because you aren't sleeping with them in, which pulls on your natural hair, or showering or swimming with them, where the water weight can also pull on your natural hair.  I have never experienced any hair loss or damage while wearing clip ins.

8.  How do I put extensions in?

Check out this tutorial and the insert in your extension box for detailed step-by-step instructions on how to easily clip in your extensions.

9.  What does 160 grams "before clips added" means?

Some companies add the weight of their clips into the overall weight of their hair.  Always ask if the weight is of the hair only, or the hair and the clips total.  girlgetglamorousHAIR is 160 grams of Indian Remy hair, then the clips are added onto those wefts.

10.  How can I tell the difference between Human and Synthetic hair?

Human hair is cool to the touch.  It will feel cold when you run your hands through it.  Synthetic hair will melt and smell like burning plastic if you try to apply heat to it. Human hair can be cut, heat styled, washed, and colored just as you can with your own hair, for a seamless match.

11.  Why did my straight hair dry wavy after I washed them?

girlgetglamorousHAIR uses 100% human hair.  This hair is treated to be smooth, but will dry to be wavy after washing because it is human hair.  You can straighten it with a flat iron to smooth it out again.

4.  Any styling ideas for my girlgetglamorousHAIR extensions?

Yep!   Glad you asked.  Please check out our video gallery.  We add new videos frequently, so please check back often for new styling ideas!

5.  Can I cut and color my girlgetglamorousHAIR extensions?

Yes.  However, hair extensions need to be cut and colored a special way.  Make sure to ask your stylist if they are familiar with cutting extension hair or can recommend someone that specializes in cutting extensions.  It has to be cut dry and with a technique called "point cutting."  An extension specialist will know and understand this technique.  I highly recommend having a stylist trim your extensions to fit your hair cut and face, it makes a huge difference!

Your extensions are 100% human hair, so they can be colored.  Howver, girlgetglamorousHAIR uses a special coloring method to slowly color the hair for the richest color with the least amount of damage.  Make sure your colorist is familiar with dying hair extensions, because it is very different than coloring your own hair and will most likely require a different color formula.
